The Line It Is Drawn #116 for 11/22/12: Tarzan vs. the Phantom -- Showdown at the Skull Cave!
Since 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the original publication of TARZAN OF THE APES, the theme this week was Tarzan. I chose Mike Shirley's suggestion of Tarzan & the Phantom, since it's one of those crossovers that seems like SUCH a natural I can't believe it hasn't happened yet.
I decided to have the two of them in combat, since that's always fun to draw. The 19th Phantom was roughly contemporary with Tarzan's original era, and the Phantom's Skull Cave seemed like a natural place for the fight to happen. Once I thought about WHY the two of them might be fighting, I remembers a reference I read in Philip Jose Farmer's TARZAN ALIVE years ago: Tarzan received an immortality treatment from a witch doctor, enabling him to continue his adventures into the present day. Since the Phantom is an "immortal" himself (The mantle is passed down from generation to generation), it seemed like the perfect choice! Farmer's chronology even put Tarzan receiving the treatment in January 1912 - serendipity in action!
