Race Bannon in STAR QUEST by johntrumbull Race Bannon in STAR QUEST by johntrumbull
Here's a drawing I did at the tail end of August for the sketchbook of my buddy Lancelot Falk (You might remember him as a producer on THE REAL ADVENTURES OF JONNY QUEST back in the 90s). Since we're both huge fans of the 60s shows JONNY QUEST and the original STAR TREK, I knew I had to do something combining our big loves! This is playing off some rather infamous dialogue from the JQ episode "Pursuit of the Po-Ho." Back in 1964, it was perfectly okay for heroes to refer to some island natives as "ignorant savages" and "heathen monkeys." Today, it doesn't play so hot. :)

*** In the "It's a Small World" Department: Not a half hour after I posted this up here, someone posted it on Lance's Facebook timeline, with the note, "You'll like this." Too funny! ***

The "heathen monkeys" thing was even referenced in Toby Danger.  I almost pissed myself because I laughed so hard at it.

I wish I could find the full version of it that wasn't cut down to be a Freakazoid segment. :-)

There was a longer version?  I hadn't heard that.  I knew it wasn't originally intended for Freakazoid, but had it already been produced before it ended up on that show?

Yes, it was originally a 15 minute short, according to the DVD commentary for the episode. I hope the other half of it still exists, somewhere.

Wow, that's very interesting.  I'd love to see that, too.  I have a few friends in the animation business that I could ask about it.

I just asked my friend Lancelot falk, a big Jonny Quest fan (he also worked on the second, non-sucky season of 1990s JQ revival).  Lance knows Butch Lukic, the board guy for the Toby Danger short and has seen the full length storyboards.  Lance says that TD was cut down in the storyboard stage, and not by too much.  Just tightened up.  So no, there's not a full-length Toby Danger short floating around out there.  Sorry!

I suspect Race and Kirk would be at each others throats! A clashing of egos as this world has never seen! Kirk would win, of course :-)
Only one picky little nerdy change -- Race and Spock should switch insignias!

I just double checked, and you're absolutely right!  I can't believe I got that wrong!  Maybe I'll adjust it in Photoshop...
